Love Birmingham
Self-initiated.

Brief/

To redefine identity, create community and regenerate
pride in Birmingham.

Outcome/

Initially it was helpful to write a manifesto to clearly state from the beginning the aims of Love Birmingham. This was also to help give a sense of direction and purpose as the enterprise expanded and attracted other contributors. It was then decided a blog would be the best way to collect, report, advertise and inform on various areas of interest with Birmingham. These were predominantly with a design influence but always with one eye on the history and understanding the context out of which these current things had developed from. Whether that be people, places, food, music, architecture or anything else that was considered great about Birmingham.

Then to reinforce the sense of identity and belonging it was considered worthwhile to design stickers: initially to intrigue and question and later to act as a banner under which everything positive about Birmingham could sit comfortably and not alienate any one group, people or area.

Clarendon was chosen as the Love Birmingham typeface because of its historical connection with the city (street signs in particular) but also due to the sheer coverage it seems to have on Birmingham and the distinct tail on the upper-case R. It also performs well small on a business card as well large on signage so has the versatility to adapt to future projects when the need arises.
